I have a laptop running Windows 8 and I have been unable to connect any blackberry devices to it. I have tried the following. The blackberry isn't even comming up in the list under the USB Controllers the laptop seems to just ignore it.
Verified cable works on another computer (win XP) picked it up right away.
Tried a Different Cable
Tried another old BB I had laying around, Didn't work either (BB 8520)
Disabled Windows Firewall
Disabled AVG Anti-Virus
Re-installed BB Desktop Software
Installed BB driver 7.0 pack
Changed the power setting for the USB controllers to always on.
.net framework 3.5 is installed and turned on
Using Administrator Loggin
Blackberry is getting power over the USB connection, LIghtning Bolt on battery
The USB ports work perfectly fine when I plug my iPhone into them.
Anybody got any other ideas?

Hello grazzahart and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
What's the version of BlackBerry Desktop Software you are using?
Have you done a reboot of your computer after installing BlackBerry Desktop Software? Reboot your device?
Since you are seeing the lightening bolt on the device, when you connected your device to the computer was there any sound played to indicate a USB drive was being connected?
On the USB cord, do you see the USB trident on the small connector port?

I am using version 7.1 freshly downloaded on Monday, The phones I used were Bold 9900 and Curve 8520
I have tried doing reboots of both the blackberry and the laptop several times.
There are no sounds to indicate the device is being connected to the laptop, Blackberry just switchs to the big clock and starts charging.
Both of the USB cords that I have tried had the trident on the small port.
After extensive research yesterday I have picked up a tip that installing Java updates before reinstalling the software sometimes helps so I will try this tomorrow.
I am quite sure the problem is somewhere within windows 8 as using the same BDS installed on other Windows XP and Win 7 machines it picked both phones up right away.

Experiencing similar, or identical problem. Trying to use Desktop Manager on a brand spanking new Windows 8.1 machine. Previously tried to use Desktop Manager in Windows 8 (prior to updating it just now).
Desktop Manager seems to install and run correctly. PROBLEM is that the BlackBerry Storm is not recognized when the USB cable is plugged in. This was not the case using earlier versions of Windows on different machines.
I have turned on Mass Storage Mode Auto-Detect (in the Blackberry under "Options")
Re-installed BlackBerry drivers
Suspended virus detection
Tried all USB ports
None of these works. As another poster states, I might as well be plugging a potato into the USB port.

I managed to retrieve an older version of the blackberry desktop application and installed it on my windows 8 PC successfully. This worked fine with my blackberry device.
You may try this too and see if it helps.
I installed one of the version 6.
