nothing happens after i connect (using USB on my XP machine) and try to click on backup/restore (or ANY of the other menu selections, none work)
the status does change from disconnected to connected...and it even tells me new device detected...shows the name and everything(aka the drivers are doing their jobs) it also tells me to upgrade the applications on my phone...and thats when it goes into that "sync" mode...and nothing updates...none of the buttons work...i just disconnect my phone and the status goes back to disconnected...

Argh, if you could click on the Synchronization options, you could disable the "sync the selected items when your devcie is connected to the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
Try it with the BlackBerry NOT connected.

ok, well it does matter in what I am trying to guide you through.
You have more than one issue here.
At this point, I was hoping to knock out out at least one, the autosyncing issue at the startup.
Because, with that issue at the beginning of EACH opening of DM, you can't get to the remainder.

Gotta ask at this point, do you have another PC you can try this on? Office, friend, kid?

Okay, so I got this resolved, simply by going to "Check for updates" and sure enough there was an update from last week that fixed it for me!
