I am having the exact same problem with my BB.
Except it does recognize the usb to the BB, so it is charging, but doesn't recognize to the computer so I can't back up or transfer anything onto it.

I am having the same problem with my brand new Bold, bought today.
The desktop manager installs fine, but displays a message saying 'please verify your device is connected'.No matter which USB hub I plug it into, a box appears in the bottom right hand corner of my screen (I use Windows Vista ) saying it has 'malfunctioned' and cannot be recognised. It does not charge and while it is plugged in can be used as normal.
On going into the device manager it says no driver has been installed for the device, nor am I able to install one - I even copied the driver from a friend, to no avail.
I don't want to return it the day after I bought it, can anyone help? Thanks.
