Several reasons:

--only BlackBerry to BlackBerry

--Data travels over the BlackBerry network instantly

--secure

and other features like sending picture files, GPS locations, etc.

Blackberry Instant messeger is owned by RIM and it uses Pin to Pin technology, which means you can only message between Blackberry device users.

For other IM srevices, like Google Talk, you can use it between BB device and PC and talk to any Google users, same deal with Windows Live, Yahoo Talk.
