Read / unread synchronisation

[ Edited ]

I'm using the BIS solution for read and send emails from my Blackberry and synchronize with my Outlook Exchange account. Everything works fine. The only thing is that if I open an email in my Outlook it always keeps marked unread on my Blackberry. In the other direction it works well, so if I read an email on my Blackberry, a short time later it is marked as read in my Outlook.

Is there a solution for this?

Thanks in advance,

Eric

Re: Read / unread synchronisation

You have your setup on BIS via OWA? if yes look at OWA to the bottom of this link

http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB05129

Microsoft Outlook Web Access support

The integration of Microsoft® Outlook® Web Access 2003 enabled email accounts is now supported by the BlackBerry Internet Service.

Note: Email reconciliation of read and unread status for Microsoft Outlook Web Access enabled email accounts is one-way only (from BlackBerry smartphone to Microsoft Outlook Web Access mailbox). NOT YOUR OUTLOOK

Re: Read / unread synchronisation

> 1 Messages sent from Outlook via a fastmail IMAP account do not appear on my Blackberry Bold - except, bizarrely, those sent via a Googlemail POP account!  How can I make the Blackberry treat messages sent from my fastmail account in the same way as those sent from my Googlemail POP account?

Re: Read / unread synchronisation

The only way to get 2-way sync with BIS is using Yahoo Mail.

I know Gmail claims they support it, but I've never been able to get it working.

And via OWA on Exchange, it's only 1 way sync.

Re: Read / unread synchronisation

I was reviewing this request, and I have a similar situation.

Here is the setup:

Blackberry unit (Either Storm or Curve) on BIS using OWA for email.

we are using Micorsoft SBS Exchange as our email application.

When a new email comes in, Exchange receives it, and marks is "unread".

Within 20 minutes, BIS has sent the message to the handheld and the unit shows "unread".

As soon as the user reads the message on the blackberry, Exchange marks the message as read.

We do not want this.  We still want to use Exchange, but not have the BIS mark the messages as read in Exchange.

We can change from OWA to either POP3 or IMAP.

I read the link listed above, but it did not seem to address the issue.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Re: Read / unread synchronisation

Hi there!

For reference, here is the KB that discusses the OTA reconciliation features available with various email systems via BIS:

  • KB05133 Email reconciliation features for the BlackBerry Internet Service

To turn on or off the OTA reconciliation features, see this KB:

  • KB13509 How to reconcile email messages between the messaging server and the BlackBerry smartphone

I believe that if you turn off OTA sync that the read/unread status will no longer reconcile from the HH to the server. But, I also think that it is an all or nothing...if you shut off OTA reconciliation, then none of the items will reconcile...so choose wisely. You should probably run some controlled tests to be certain how it will work with your specific environment. You can also experiment with alternate interfaces for BIS to reconcile through (e.g., POP, IMAP) instead of OWA.

Good luck and let us know!

Re: Read / unread synchronisation

Thank you for those links.  That seems to answer our questions.

What we are looking for is all computers inside the office to be on exchange and not use IMAP or POP3.  But at the same time, we don't want the HH to mark emails read on exchange until they are read from the desktop (if that makes sense).

The two KB dics you sent seem to answer the questions.  We are trying out a test now and if all works well we will be set to go.

Thanks again.

Excellent! Do let us know how it all works out...there surely will be someone in the future who needs the same information, and your posting the results will help them.

Cheers!
