Late Monday night into the wee hours of Tuesday morning I updated my BB Curve 8530 from OS 5.0.0.886 to OS 5.0.0.973 (the update in between I wasn't informed of and therefore did not get). During the update my phone kept freezing but eventually the update completed, the phone rebooted and everything seemed fine. Then while checking to see if I had lost any settings I noticed that when I plugged my phone into the wall charger it no longer automatically went into Bedside Mode and displayed the camera. I checked the settings which appeared to be the same and then out of nowhere my device decided to reboot itself.
On Tuesday evening I again tried to figure out why it wouldn't automatically go into Bedside Mode, but could find no reason as to why it no longer was working. In the meantime I had come to realize that seconds before any ringtone/alert went off, my device would make this loud and very annoying popping sound. I performed a battery pull which fixed the Bedside Mode issue, however, the speakers were still making the popping noise. Then I noticed that almost all my music had been duplicated. At that point I plugged my phone into my laptop and my device immediately rebooted itself. After it reloaded I plugged it in again and it said that I only had six songs... one sample which I had previously deleted that somehow came back and one other that had been duplicated five times. None of these would allow me to delete them. I then viewed my device files as removable memory on my laptop which showed the original 25 songs that I should have, however, DM and my device all were saying something different from one another.
At that point, out of frustration, I performed a battery pull again which fixed the music issue, but again there was a popping noise coming from my speaker seconds prior to any alert going off.
Now today I discovered when I try to delete my Gmail it no longer gives me the option to Delete From Device or Delete From Mailbox And Device, as I now only have two options... Delete or Cancel. Now I have to delete them from my device and then go online to delete them from my mailbox, which has really defeated the purpose of my having the phone in the first place, which was to avoid using my home internet as we have a monthly usage allowance.
I also noticed today that my Turn Power Off app doesn't work, whereas the day before it did. Before when I would click the app it would ask Power Off or Full Power Off, the first of which did the exact same thing as holding down the end call button. Now there is no options and it just does exactly what holding down the end call button does, which doesn't fully power off the device as nothing has to reload when it is powered back on.
During all of this my device has rebooted itself at least three times that I know of and I have performed a battery pull three times. Each time a battery pull is performed something is fixed and something else quits working.
Anyway, the issue with Gmail makes having my phone pointless as I still have to go online to delete stuff, I no longer have a way to fully power off the device with the Turn Power Off app not working and my speaker is still making a loud popping noise before any alert goes off.
Is anyone else having these issues? Is there a way to fix them? What should I do?
Thanks in advance to those who reply!

I, too, have experienced a multitude of issues since this same upgrade. Over the weekend my Blackberry Curve 8530 updated to OS 5.0.0.973 and since then it does not go into the "bedside" mode (showing the analog clock) when plugged in, just as reported by Javabrat. Additionally, I no longer get the blinking red LED when an incoming message or email arrives. None of my instant messaging applications work any longer and that includes GTalk, Windows Live Messenger, Blackberry Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger. All are now broken and when you try to launch any of them, you get an error message that says: Uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException. This same message appears regardless of which instant messaging application you try to launch. To get around this for now, I have had to switch to Nimbuzz but I'd prefer to have access to the native IM clients. I'm hoping the next wireless update that gets pushed to us will fix that problem. Another oddity is now my BB is unbelievably slow. There is enormous lag even just to move the cursor around the screen. That was never any issue until this OS update. I don't recall how many come up but anytime I reboot the phone, I get two or three error message pop-ups. Prior to this OS update I NEVER got error messages like that. Another oddity: once the phone has booted to the home screen and I enter the device password, I get a pop-up that says "Enterprise Configuration" for a few moments and then goes away on its own. That never happened before, either.
As reported by javabrat, my BB was functioning perfectly until this update to OS 5.0.0.973 and the phone has really been a bear since then. I wish I could downgrade to the previous OS version until the bugs in 5.0.0.973 could be worked out so that I'd once again have the full capabilities of my BB back.

I did downgrade back to OS 5.0.0.886 which fixed the bedside mode issue, however, all the others still remained. Finally I got sick and tired of putting hours into trying to fix something that I didn't screw up and I contacted Verizon. It took a couple of times having a hissy fit, but finally Saturday morning they agreed to overnight a replacement device to me under the manufacturers warranty. I got the replacement, with OS 5.0.0.886 back up and running yesterday and have not had one problem. I also noticed that my used memory on my last BB was up around 27% whereas the replacement has all the same apps plus a couple I didn't have before and it's only using 12%. I don't know if that had anything to do with the lag and problems, but I know I couldn't be happier now that I'm back to the old OS.
So try contacting your carrier and see if they can't replace it as mine was since its the RIM update that caused all my problems and likely yours as well.
Good luck!

How does one downgrade back to a former version to get rid of the bugs I got with 5.0.0.973?

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
You can install any OS package for your BB model via this procedure:
If you choose to use a package that is from other than your BB's original carrier, then insert, between steps 1 and 2, the deletion, on your PC, of a file named vendor.xml.
Good luck!

Hello and welcome Mindyb!
The link that sdgardne supplied you with is a step-by-step guide that everyone suggests to follow when trying to downgrade your OS, however, for me it would not work. This may be due to the fact that all my updates were OTA (Over The Air), but who knows.
IF for some reason the guide doesn't work for you either, try using the Blackberry DM (Desktop Manager) 5.0 as that is how downgraded with very little effort.
Open DM and plug your device into your PC via the USB cable. Backup your device as usual. I would also suggest copying any files you may have on your MicroSD card to a folder on your desktop as well as I don't believe the DM backs up anything on the card.
After you're done backing up everything click the Application Loader and then Update Software. A list of your OS updates should be listed. Mark the OS that you do want and unmark the OS that you want rid of and click Next. I believe the next step will ask you what apps you want and all (or most) will be marked. If you want to keep the app leave the mark next to it otherwise unmarking an app will un-install it. When you're done making changes to the apps click Next and the 12-step process for downgrading your device should begin. The process for me took about 30-45 minutes after which I had OS 5.0.0.886 back and didn't lose any of my settings.
Hope this helps and good luck!

Hello,
Thanks for the clarification - to go further, your suspicion is correct...the process recommended is decidedly NOT for OTA updates. We tend to strongly recommend against any OTA updates as they are the most prone to error and resulting data loss. Tethered updates provide the ability to not only take a backup but save that backup and use it again (for restore) should anything go wrong. During OTA updates, an on-device backup is indeed taken, but if anything goes wrong, the backup file is lost forever and never again usable as source for restore. Hence, we recommend against any OTA updates.
That said, I am curious why the recommended update process did not work for you...there is no conflict between it and OTA updates...rather, the recommended process is simply another process to accomplish the same task. So, to understand your situation, further details would be required...but not in this thread. If you wish to pursue that line, please open a new thread dedicated to just your issue.
Cheers!

I just updated my Curve 8530 completed about thirty minutes ago, and i haven't had any problems. I usually wait a couple of weeks before i perform an update after being informed of one. That way, when there are still bugs, they have time to correct them before I install the new version. My wife, who has the same phone, updates as soon as she is alerted of them, and she has problems occasionally with her phone. That is my input here, so I hope somebody can use the information and expand on it!

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Your advice is sound...with one tiny modification. If, during your 2-week waiting period, there is nothing actually changed in the released OS (i.e., the version number does not change), then there is no difference installing upon immediate release and 2-weeks later. They would have to release a new version (with a new version number) in order to correct any of those "bugs" that might exist.
