why can i not install whats app ? Skype etc surely after such a long wait for the z10, you would think basic apps would be available to download

skype developers and whatsapp developers are late, but the apps are said to be available "soon" for the Z10.

It's not officially released yet.
You can try sideloaded the Android version. It's working fine. I get push notifications, Group Chats, send pictures and stuff... the only problem is that it doesn't detect your contacts so you have to rely on your chat's profile pic to know who that person is :smileytongue:
