WhatsApp was updated to v.2.9.4951 today... check your AppWorld > Myworld for an upgrade.

Perhaps that will correct your issue.

Since I have gone thru wipe and rebuild about 5 times now I can tell you it seems to take a brief period of time for the app to load the contact. It does it automatically but not immediately.
