I thought whatsapp had more to do with HUB integration and push notifications than running in the background.

indeed there are two parts for WhatsApp.

1) the GUI which you can see when you invoke it (by clicking on the icon)

2) the daemon that can receive messages from WhatsApp servers. That daemon is the part JSanders is referring to, and the visual manifestation of it is receiving notifications (in OS 10.0) or WhatsApp messages (in OS 10.1) in the Hub.

There's an App named 'Network Monitor' (which I made a query about here) which may be something related to what you're looking for ukmight.
