Hi,
I've just received my Curve 8520. I want to download some applications through my computer . However, during the "connect your smartphone" step during the system check ( which comes after having selected the app you want to download), the phone won't connect, even though it is physically connected through USB, because the "Device radio is off ". How do you turn it on? I've already turned all connections on with manage connections and did a battery pull.
I can't get them directly through the phone because " the data service is not operational". I only have Wi-Fi
Please help

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Ahhh...that is clear...AppWorld requires a full BB-level data plan, regardless of if you desire to use it via the carrier data network or via WiFi:

Is there any way to get apps onto the phone, without appworld?

Yes -- AppWorld is mainly a portal, vending apps developed mainly by others. As such, it is not your exclusive procurement source -- there are others that you can try:
I have found that there are many apps that are not exclusive to AppWorld. You can search the on-line catalog and then search out other procurement sources, including quite often the developer website itself. Indeed, even for some RIM-developed apps (e.g., FaceBook, Twitter), there are alternatives to AppWorld for obtaining them. But, you are likely to discover that not having a data plan will preclude many apps from functioning. A BB without a proper data plan is, IMO, barely better than a standard cell phone.
