Facebook messenger states there is a Connection Error and has done for the past 4 weeks, when will this problem ever be fixed, extremely frustrating to say the least. Have deleted and reinstalled it on several occasions but to no avail. This app is absolute rubbish

As a user-to-user, no one here knows the answer to that question...and, even if they did, they would likely be barred from revealing (NDA, Proprietary Information, Forward Looking Statements, etc.).
Further, from the error as you quote it ("Connection Error"), I can find nothing in the public KBs that is directly on point...but, then again, from that error information, there are many many results from the search. I recommend you conduct a search of the public KBs to see if perhaps you can find one that matches your situation:
Nevertheless, with a strong carrier network signal (e.g., not merely WiFi), I suggest the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (steps 1 and 2 each should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):
1) Register HRT
2) Resend Service Books (pre-BB10 devices only)
Hopefully that will get things going again for you!
If not, then perhaps you can attempt to boot into Safe Mode:
It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, see what happens.
If the app works fine in Safe Mode, then some other app is interfering, and you'll need to try and figure out which one it is. Think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.
But if the behavior continues in Safe Mode, then you may need to consider more drastic actions -- WIPE, OS Reload, BBSAK Wipe/Reload, and the "Bare Bones" OS Reload Process. To prepare, you should be sure that you have a full backup to your PC...please review the Backup link in my auto-sig on this post for instructions.

Of course, if your suspicion is correct (e.g., that the app is "rubbish"), then it's entirely possible that there is no resolution for your situation. You would need formal support, which would start with your mobile service provider, who would be able to formally escalate you case to BlackBerry. There is no free path to bypass that contractually required support path...you must start with your carrier, who would be able to escalate.
