I was having the same problem. On the locked screen had an event about some old msn messenger contact's birthday. So went on the calendar pressed and hold the event and then delete the whole series. However the event would still show on the locked screen. So only solution i had was to stop syncronizing the calendar of my hotmail account and it finally worked.

I was actually just discussing this the other day. Unfortunately the sync is all or nothing. I have Facebook connected, but deleted most of the contacts. I still get alerts about their birthdays. I don't want notifications for all of them, only some of them. I decided that I should just turn the whole thing off, which solved it for now. Hopefully at some point in the future we can select which people show, or at least have more control over notifications on the lock screen.
Re: your 'friend' Lincoln...do you by chance have a calendar with holidays on it? Tuesday is (President Abraham) Lincoln's birthday.
