BBM Group Chat Message Retrieval - Help Make a Mother's Day!

Hey folks,

I recently returned from a trip abroad and while away I sent to my family various messages to a little BBM Group my younger sister help set up of what I had done the previous days. For some reason that remains to be seen, the default setting on BBM Groups is keep messages for 3 days. Needless to say, there were a few messages that my mom really liked and wants to save, but she isn't technologically inclined and they have since disappeared from her phone.

Is there any way to get these messages back? Perhaps a phone restore to a few days ago or something? Or is there someone I can call at BB or my carrier (Rogers) to get them to retrieve it? Surely it's saved on a server somewhere.

My mom woke up this morning stressed beyond belief that she's lost one message I sent in particular (the one reflecting on the trip as a whole) and she would love to be able to save it.

Thanks, and to the mothers out there: have a happy mother's day!

Re: BBM Group Chat Message Retrieval - Help Make a Mother's Day!

There's no way to retrieve lost BBM messages, UNLESS she had the BBM options set to save the Chat history, check her BBMessenger > Options > Save Chat History to ON?

If not, no.

But, now, set the group chat history to on, and set the save chat to a longer period.

And no, these messages are not saved on a server anywhere to access... that would be a huge violation of privacy and security.

Oh, perhaps someone else IN that Group had their Chat History set to be on, perhaps you did?

Re: BBM Group Chat Message Retrieval - Help Make a Mother's Day!

Thanks for the response JSanders,

Her phone does not save messages, but on my device I have that option set to ON. If this will work, how do I go about retrieving these off of my phone? Plug it in and launch desktop manager?

Thanks again!!

Is yours saving the chat history to the media card or device memory?

Click on your Media icon > press the Menu button > Explore.

now, navigate to the the different folders and see where the chat history is located.

You should be able to view that file, or on your PC.

Re: BBM Group Chat Message Retrieval - Help Make a Mother's Day!

I have been saving it to the device. I have located the folder that has all of my chat history, but none of the files can be displayed.

Should I connect my phone to my computer or should I try and email these to my laptop email?

Yes, try via the PC.

Remind me, what is the file format of the history file saved? I don't have my other BlackBerry with me to check.

They are .csv files. I will try and connect it now.

Re: BBM Group Chat Message Retrieval - Help Make a Mother's Day!

Sorry for the seemingly remedial questions here but now that it is connected via desktop manager, how do I actually get the files off of the phone?

CSV files can be opened using Excel or most any database software or a notepad application...

How to manually transfer files between a BlackBerry smartphone and a Windows computer
