BIS OTA Contact Sync Issue

Hi,

Plain and simple, when you add an email account through the email wizard and ask for contact and calendar sync, contacts won't sync.

This is the third attempt to get some help on this issue. Neither The guys on twitter an Beta Zone managed to solve this. I'd also like to state I've seen at least two more people with the same issue.

I'll paste the lwhole things here. I'm frustated and not in the mood to type it all again. I really hope one of you can give me some pointers on how to solve this.

========

Hi,

I've been on this with @BlackBerryHelp already with no luck on it, so I hope you guys have better luck helping me and the few others reporting this.

After the latest Email Client update (6.11.0419.0755)  the native contact sync both for google and yahoo email accounts does not work. It seems just a few people have been affected thou. When I get the Activation screen, after adding the email, only Calendar shows on the list. Before I would have Calendar and Contacts and both would show a progression (1/X or X%). Some times I get an never seen before Activation icon on the homescreen, that will be there, stuck at 10%, even thou the process has already finished with the calendar and is not doing anything about contacts.

Here is what BlackBerryHelp suggested. I tried both solutions to no avail:

-- Try removing and adding your email account back and then test. ^RK

>> I did this so many times I lost count of it. Kinda insulted they assumed I haven't tried it...

-- Try to go through the following clean application load process http://t.co/z37YC9f Test the sync before restoring any backups ^RK

>> I did the dreaded 507 wipe and reload plenty of times before they told me to do that, but I tried it as well, 1st with .285, then .395 and finally .576. None of them worked. Finally I got this very disappointing message.

>> At this point I suggest that you contact your wireless provider and have them escalate this to Research In Motion. ^BBS

Calling my carrier (in Brasil) and having them understand that I need to talk to somebody over at RIM (Canada) was a nightmare and I don't wanna try a second time...

So, there you have it. I had to fall back to Google Sync, but that app... well...

This is all happening o my Bold 9780, unlocked, unbranded, brough in the UK (Carphone Warehouse), being used in VIVO Brasil, if it is of any help. I really hope you guys can figure out why this is happening.

This is the 1st time I can't solve a problem with my BB and I want to believe I am not alone here.

Re: BIS OTA Contact Sync Issue

Hello there

As per my experience you cannot sync OTA with the data plan of BIS. It can be sync using cradle. The OTA feature will only support for the users of BES (Blackberry Enterprize Server). May be there is some way but i long as i know i cannot be because

Here is a detail comparision between BIS and BES.

BIS Features

1.         You can add 10 any email account POP3, IMAP, OWA, Outlook Anywhere etc.

2.         Contct Sync Only y Cradle

3.         No Server Dependency

4.        BB Server in LAN (NO)

5.        Browsing Internet Only

6.        Advance Security  NO

7.       Remote Address Lookup  NO

8.      Typical Desplyement <20 users or  ISP mail

BES Features:

1.       BB Server in LAN  Yes

2.       Email system Supported    Exchange, Notes, Lotus Domino, Groupwise

3.       Mail Boxes        1

4.       Browsing          Intranet +Internet

5.       Typical Deplyment   20 to 20000 Users

6.       PIM Sync         OTA

7.       Advance Security    Yes, 3DES & AES supported

8.       Remote address Lookup   Yes

9.       Email Admin Tool Policy          Yes  OTA

I hope now you understand that the BIS dataplan does not support any type of OTA sync. It can only be sync using Cradle method. See the web for cradle method for more details.

Need any help please post but be exact

Thanks and Regards

Soooo, you mean that there are absolutely NO sync servics in BIS eh?

Now, let's take a look...

BIS has offered Gmail and Yahoo contact/calendar sync for about an year at least (OS5+). You info is NOT accurate.

Thanks for taking the time to write all that anyway, appreciated even if not helpful.

Re: BIS OTA Contact Sync Issue

No problem. Carrier is VIVO (Brasil) btw, as shown in the pictures. I am quite sure gmail/yahoo contact/calendar sync has been rolled out on all carriers by now, it was a 3.x feature and 4.x is just around the corner.

Soo, anybody able to help? Really could use some help here....

Re: BIS OTA Contact Sync Issue

[ Edited ]

I call BS on whoever told you that BIS doesn't do Contact and Calendar sync.

I had a similar issue after my recent OS upgrade with my 9800.

Go to Messages >> Options >> [e-mail account] >> Look for Wireless Sync.  If you are not given the option to enable it, or it is not there at all, then that's your problem.  Personally, I'd do this process even it it does let you enable it just to be on the safe side.

The solution is definitely multi-step and lengthy, but it seemed to do the trick for me.

    1. Log into BIS and copy your filters into a backup text file on your desktop.
      • (I typically name my filters XXXX [To:], YYYY [From:], ZZZ [Subject:], etc... so they are easy to replicate if lost
    2. Make sure that you've backed up all your contacts and calendars, preferrably using either Blackberry Protect or SmrtGuard.  I say this for those reading this that may not think to do it.
    3. Delete the e-mail act from the BIS interface.
    4. Connect Blackberry to Desktop.
    5. Open BB Desktop Manager.
    6. Delete Service Books.
    7. Perform a hard reset.
    8. Manually force a "Register your phone on the network"
      1. On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options, or click Settings > Options.
        • Note: The location of the Options screen depends on the version of BlackBerry Device Software and the theme running on the BlackBerry smartphone.
      2. Complete the step associated with the appropriate version of BlackBerry Device Software (http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB16383):
          • For BlackBerry Device Software 6.0, perform the following steps:
            • Device > Advanced System Settings > Host Routing Table
          • For BlackBerry Device Software 4.1 through 5.0, perform the following steps:
            • Advanced Options > Host Routing Table
          • For BlackBerry Device Software 3.7.1 through 4.0.2:
            • Host Routing Table
          • BlackBerry Device Software 3.0 through 3.7:
            • Network
          • Note: On some BlackBerry smartphones that run BlackBerry Device Software 3.7.1, Register Now might be found as an option in the Network menu.
          • BlackBerry Device Software 2.0 through 2.7:
            • Network Settings
      3. Press the Menu key and click Register Now.
    9. Resend your service books for the default @xxxx.blackberry.com email account.
        1. From the Home screen, click Setup > Email Settings or Email Accounts.
        2. If required select Internet Mail Account.
        3. In the Email Accounts screen, display the menu and click Service Books.
        4. Click Send Service Books.
    10. Add your email account in BIS.
        • DO NOT enable Contact or Calendar sync yet.
    11. Change the default services to your new email account
        • Calendar (CICAL)
        • Contact List (SYNC)
    12. Just to be on the safe-side, I'd do a hard reboot again.
    13. Go into the e-mail settings on your Blackberry, NOT the BIS web interface.
    14. Go down to synchronization and enable Contacts and Calendar.
    15. Your BB should appear to go through an Enterprise Activation.
        • Even though you are on BIS, this is perfectly normal and expected
    16. Once it is done, you can confirm it has been completed by checking the status of "Wireless Synchronization" in the Address Book App.
    17. It is extremely possible that you might end up with several duplicate contacts after finishing this process.
      • To remove the duplicates on Gmail which will push to the Blackberry, I'd recommend a web service called scrubly.com
      • Remember that BIS does not sync the following contact fields:
        • Avatar pictures
        • Groups/Categories
        • Birthday/Anniversaries
        • Instant Messaging
      • BIS will only sync contacts under "My Contacts".  Make sure that, in Gmail, you have turned off "Create contacts for auto-complete:"
      • The BIS Calendar Sync will only sync your default Google Calendar.  It will not sync any of your other calendars.  You can only have one calendar per email address.

I hope this helps.  Lemme know if it works for you.

Re: BIS OTA Contact Sync Issue

[ Edited ]

You don't remember me do you? I was the guy that told Kevin about the PlayBook Initiative. I appreciate the amount of detail but most the explanations were not really necessary (althou it is one guide I'll probably point out anytime I see such issue come up).

Ok, so here is the problem: Did all steps. When I got to the Default Services, I could not set contacts to the email, it was stuck on Default.

I'll try the whole thing again and see what happens.

With a little luck, I'll be still able to "stay in sync". :smileywink:

EDIT: Going through with it, again, only syncs the Calendar. Rebooting the process...

Re: BIS OTA Contact Sync Issue

No, I didn't remember you.  Thanks for pointing Keving to that.  Not sure if you saw, but that forum post got pulled because the CMS I was using and linking to got hacked.  So now I'm in talk w/ the mods to let me fix it.

Anyway, it is possible that you may not be able to set the default service till after you enable the contact/calendar sync.

I did this process about a week ago when the latest 9800 OS was leaked so I'm trying to replay it by memory because I didn't write it down.

Based on your initial post, I did kind of gather you knew what you were doing, but I wanted to be detailed so anyone who sees this later that isn't as savy would know exactly what to do.

Good Luck.

Re: BIS OTA Contact Sync Issue

[ Edited ]

Really, I have something stuck here.

No amount of trying changes the Defaul Contac from Defaul. I didn't have the @carrier email but once created, it automatically became defaul for IM and calendar.

EDIT: Guess I can always load a backup later... Wiping the whole thing... Again...

EDIT: I'm going through my service books... I see CMIME and CICAL ones for all emails... Aren't those IM and calendar? Where are the Contact ones?

Re: BIS OTA Contact Sync Issue

Once you have the carrier e-mail, I don't try to change the default services just yet.

Resend the service books, reboot.

Add the email act on BIS. Don't select Contact/Calendar Sync.

Wait about 5 minutes then reboot again.

Now go into the BB email settings, enable the Contact/Calendar Sync.

Finally, reboot again and change the default services.

Let's see if that works.
