How old are the two phones that are giving you problems? Typically, a smartphone battery will last you a good two years. Anything beyond that is a grace period. I only ask because the Bold 9700 has been around for a while and I suspect that the Li-Ion batteries in these two are past their prime.

In addition to what Bill said, you may also consider the location where the phone was since you mentioned that the problem happened the same day for two phones. If those phone happen to exert more effort to get coverage to sustain themselves, they lose more battery life faster.
