Emoticon substitution in text messages

We are a pathology lab that sends laboratory results to Doctors via SMS.

Some of our clients have been complaining about emoticon substitution in messages. It appears to be limited to blackberry devices. We have tested this on the following phone : 9360 with (V7.1.0907 platform 9.6.0.132)

It appears that the phone substitutes a graphical emoticon even when the ascii emoticon string is a substring of a longer string i.e. not bounded by spaces

So in the string "Hepatitis=Positive" the Equals and P get replaced by the eyes closed, toungue out graphic.

We have tested this on other (non-blackberry) platforms and so far all others require that the emoticon string have spaces on either side before the substitution takes place, otherwise the text is simply treated as part of the longer string and left as is - which makes much more sense.

Regards
