How to change Contact view to see Category / Group folders only

Hi everyone, just got my first BlackBerry.

The Bold (9000) has the best screen.

To be honest, I was anti-BlackBerry when they first came out.

Didn't like the plastic feel.

Now that the Bold is here, and for some time, finally I have turned.

After using it for only a week, I must say, I am very impressed and now plan to continue use.

I will also continue to have a second, very basic phone.

I have figured most things out, even added many additional services, most of them Google style.

Have BIS access, soon to change to BES for access to our new work SBS Exchange.

Even some of the more difficult functions, services and settings are solvable for me.

I do work in an Optus Dealer outlet, primarily focused on business.

On to the question...

Is it possible to set the main (first/default) contact view to display Category 'folders' only.

I would really like to be able to open my contacts, select my category, then search.

For me, this would be so much easier.

Eg. CONTACTS \ office \ Steve

or CONTACTS \ family \ Mum

or CONTACTS \ friends \ David

or CONTACTS \ Optus \ Wireless Technical Support

This would save me searching, especially as some contacts may have a different name then I first expect (eg, the 'hundreds' of Optus numbers, may be "ULL Pre-Activation" or "Fixed line setup support")

I imagine it would have to display any contacts that have not been assigned to a group (category).

If these contacts were listed below the category folders, it would be ideal (for me).

Perhaps, even if there was an option to sort them with the category folders FIRST then ALL contacts after in alpha?

I am aware a contact can be assigned to more than one category (very useful).

If this is not an option, are there any recommended additional applications that can do this?

Hopefully as neat and effecient as BlackBerry original aps.

A few years ago I used a Windows based mobile/PDA.

To get more out of it, I also installed several SPB aps.

Ultimately if an additional ap is required, and is not free (ie must purchase), it really would need a trial period.

Thank you anyone for ANY advise.

Glad to be part of a more professional group.

Ian

Re: How to change Contact view to see Category / Group folders only

That option as a view is not available on the BlackBerry, and I am not aware of any third party applications to do so, there could be.

One option could be to name all of your Groups in such as way as they would appear first in your Contact list.

Such as instead of naming a Group "Friends", you would name it ".Friends" with a period at the beginning, which will force that Group name to the top of the Contact list view.

Re: How to change Contact view to see Category / Group folders only

I'm not really sure what JSanders means by "Groups" as there's no such thing on the BlackBerry or in Outlook.

With a BlackBerry on the BES, you'll really want to use Wireless Sychronization which means you can only sync to the Outlook Contacts folder.  If you create Contact type sub folders under the Contacts folder, entries in them will make it to your BlackBerry, but it's an ineffective solution as there is no control that way on the BlackBerry.

What the BlackBerry DOES support is Categories, and these are also the same Categories as in Outlook.  You can use the default ones that come in Outlook, or create your own.  Each contact entry can belong to more than one Category.

However, there is no way to default to view only say the "Friends" category.  You can view one category of addresses in the BlackBerry Address Book using the Filter command, but when you do this, only entries in that category are available when addressing a message or making a call.

It sounds clunky, but I found it's sufficient for me.  Besides, since you typically only need to type a few letters to bring up the desired person, I almost never use it!

You can also manually sync different Outlook contact folders, but again there's no way to make use of that.

I am afraid there is a such thing as "Groups" on a BlackBerry.

This is on BIS. The same function should be available on BES as well.

Open your BlackBerry device Address Book > Menu > New Group.

Such Groups will create a group of contacts to whom one can email as a group. Say for instance I want only my "family" members one email all at once, I would create a "Group" and add my family members to that group.

It is there. Has been for as long as I can remember.

There are "Categories" as well, but don't show in your Address Book view as Groups do. Both Groups and Categories do different things. The user above will need to decide which will serve him best, it might be "Categories".

Re: How to change Contact view to see Category / Group folders only

Thanks JSanders.

I used your advise from earlier.

I have named the groups with a '.' in front so they show at the top of the contacts list.

You are correct, and I was aware of this, that there are Groups & Categories.

In my first post, I used both terms to cover my options.

Now that I can use the Groups as I wished to, I can sort and find my contacts on my BlackBerry device for my own use.

I can use the Categories seperately on the same contacts to seperate contacts.

Once I am on BES, there will be contacts I wish to sync and contacts I would prefer to stay on my handset only.

When I do sync through BES to our Exchange service, a larger shared contact database will be used.  Often it is much easier to have my own set of contacts, and my own personal contacts grouped with some of those that are 'synced' to the server, and this can be done using the Categories.

I can very easily match and utilize my Categories with my Outlook profile.

My Groups can (and now do) allow me to sort my contacts when searching.

Much appreciated JSanders.

Take care,

Ian

Can you be a little more specific on how to do this?  I have created groups on my tour that correspond with the contact folders on my outlook but don't know how to make them sync to the proper group.  Maybe that doesn't work and you have to put the members in the group manually but I was hoping you could map it somehow.  Thank you so much for any details you can pass along.

Re: How to Multi-Select many Contacts at 1 time into a Group.

Nope. I've done the same.

Do a few today, do a few later during some free time. Add a few more tomorrow.
