How-to configure and use e-mail without BES

Hi,

I'm trying to figure how-to configure and use e-mail without using BES.

I checked with the local telco. And the number is not ascociated with any BES service.

The services entry show no indication in that direction.

Moreover, the SIM card config show that everything is disabled. Meaning that the phone is unlocked. At least that is my understanding.

However, even after a wipe, the BB device does not allow me to configure an e-mail account as described in the manual. It keeps on asking for a BES activation first.

What does it take to make that go away?

And enable "normal" e-mail configuration?

Please use plain text.

Re: How-to configure and use e-mail without BES

Do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan enabled on your account with your carrier or mobile provider?

You must, in order to get the personal email setup icon, and the RIM push email functions you are looking for, as well as additional BlackBerry data services such as the internet browser, Facebook for BlackBerry, BlackBerry Messenger, and much more.

So, call your carrier and inquire about having the BlackBerry Data Plan added to your account.

Good luck.

Re: How-to configure and use e-mail without BES

Thanks for the quick response.

I'm not interested in these specific BB services.

So are you saying you allways need a BB dataplan for being able to get mail working?

And all those other things like Facebook, browsing, etc?

Even if I don't need those BB specifics like BBM and push mail?

BlackBerry push email is the only kind of email that BlackBerry does.

You must have the BlackBerry Data plan on your account.

That's how it works.

Just to elaborate on the correct answer given by JSanders, you can still access your email accounts and social networks (facebook, twitter, google+, etc.) on your phone, you just won't have any notifications PUSHED to your phone.  You can access the internet on your phone in order to access these accounts but you have to go to them.  With BlackBerry Internet Service activated on your phone account, RIM will push these notifications of new emails, new facebook messages, new tweets etc. to your phone.  That's what you'll be missing out on without BIS activated.

I just wanted to make sure there was no confusion.  :smileyhappy:

Re: How-to configure and use e-mail without BES

Well, you can use the browser to go to the mobile facebook and twitter webpages, but you can't use the actual Facebook for Blackberry and Twitter for Blackberry applications ON the device.

Thanks guys!!!

These are really complete and meaningfull answers. :smileyhappy:

Now - the next question might be a challenging one. :Innocent:

But how are Android devices on this?

For example, is it possible to push the Facebook / Twitter / mail messages?

No smartphone brand will push any notifications to your phone without a data plan of some sort.  You'd still have to go to each individual site to get your updates.

I hope that helps you.  :smileyhappy:

That feels somewhat obvious... :smileywink:

I was more thinking about a native app. Take for example Facebook:

When the Facebook client does a check-in, the server side has all the details needed for pushing its messages and all the other things. Right?

Or is there more to it than meets the eye?

As long as you have the BlackBerry BIS data plan... yes.
