Hello, Archie42,
To better determine if the issue is being caused by the media card or the BlackBerry® smartphone, I would suggest testing the media card in a PC, if the card is working transfer the files to your PC and then reformat the card and then test in the BlackBerry.
I hope this helps.

I have the same problem. I have an 8520. I sent my phone away to be repaired because the keypad was sticking on some letters and keys. When I gave my phone I kept my SIM, battery and media card and the back cover. Everything was working fine before I sent it to be repaired except for the keypad, obviously.
When I got my phone back I received this error. That the media card cannot be read due to fatal errors.
I've checked the media card using a card reader in my laptop and it's fine. All of the files were there and they were all working. I made a backup and formatted it just to see if that would work and still have the same error when I put it back in my phone. I also tried repairing the media card and still no luck.
I took it back to the shop and he tried my media card in another Blackberry and it was working. He also tried another media card in my phone and it gave the same error. So the problem is with my device, not the media card.
I've tried pulling the battery, blowing in the media card slot and connecting the phone to my computer. When I connect the phone to the laptop with the media card in, the Blackberry Desktop Software doesn't load my phone. It just keeps connecting and eventually says disconnected. When I connect it with the media card removed it connects fine and I was able to make a backup of my device.
I'm at a complete loss for what to do. The guy in the shop seems to think that it could be a software issue and wants to reinstall the software. I'll give it a shot but I really think the problem is with the device itself.

Just to update anyone with this problem, I brought my phone to the Blackberry Experience Zone where they said it could be a software issue. I'm not an expert but I was fairly sure it wasn't a software problem. Anyway, I had a backup of everything so decided to let him to reinstall the OS.
When that didn't work he called the Blackberry Technical team to whom he sent my phone the first time the get the keypad replaced. He told them that everything was working fine until it was sent to them to be fixed and when it came back the media card was not working. The Tech team told him it was a hardware problem.
The BEZ guy wanted to send my phone back to the Tech team but said I would have to pay to get it fixed. I didn't break the phone, I'm not paying to get it fixed. My wife then overheard the other person on the phone saying something to the effect of "it's not my problem, I'm not going to fix it". So he said he'd send it and see what they say and then we could decide if we want to get it fixed or not. The next day I was informed my phone cannot be fixed.
So a word of warning to anybody sending their phone to be repaired. Leave the back cover on the device just to make sure no dust or anything else will fall in to the media card slot. Other than that I don't know what else you can do except pray.
