If you need an unlock code to unlock your BlackBerry for use on a carrier other than the one to which it is branded, check out this http://unlock.berryreview.com/
I have used this service many times, the prices are fair, and they are trusted, reputable vendors. They will respond timely. You may find cheaper or even free unlock codes, but do you TRUST them to give you the right code. Note, entering a wrong unlock code on your device ten times, can lock it permanently to that carrier.
Here's a quick guide to unlocking your BlackBerry smartphone for use on a provider other than the one to which it is branded.
First, confirm if your BlackBerry is already "unlocked" or not:
Instructions for OS 6.0 & 7.0/7.1
Type Sim Card in UNIVERSAL SEARCH. That will bring up the Sim Card menu. Open that menu then Check and see what locks are active by:
(You won't see anything as you type)
A hidden menu will open up and will say what locks are active.
To enter your unlock code:
Open the Sim Card menu
Then type mep2 or mep4.
[for OS 7.0 devices keep your finger on alt key the whole time when typing mep2 or mep4] (You won't see anything as you type) A hidden menu will open up Then enter the code we provided, click enter then you'll get a message saying "Code accepted".
TIPS, TRICKS & TROUBLE SHOOTING
**SURETYPE PEARL OR PEARL FLIP
Remember there are two letters per key so to enter Mep2 you need to click the "op" key twice to get the letter p.
**CANT BRING UP MENU TO ENTER CODE
Please try it with a different sim card inserted. And make sure you keep your finger pressed on the "alt" key when pressing 2.

I don't know which model he has. Will ask him.
Are there any restrictions to certain models? I mean, are there any specific models that won't work even when unlocked?

There could be some issues, and some models which do not work on other specific mobile providers, so his details are required.
