Opening BlackBerry OS and supporting GNU/Linux

Hello, first I'd like to congratulate RIM for their advances in BBOS7 and BB10. I am really happy with these.

But I am a GNU/Linux user, and I don't have an official "BlackBerry Desktop Software" for my Desktop OS. And I found this weird since developing tools from RIM are available for GNU/Linux.

So, here's a thought: Since RIM is trying to gain more users, why not go OpenSource?

The OpenSource Community is not at all happy with Android since it depends fully on Google and not on the community. Nokia fired Symbian and MeeGo makers, so now they are on their own at Jolla Mobile, with no money and no customers, but with great ideas and the support of the community.

Since RIM adquired QNX (another great Canadian OpenSource company), it would be nice to continue with their practice.

What do you think?

Re: Opening BlackBerry OS and supporting GNU/Linux

I am also a Linux user and an open-source fanatic.

But, here's my problem with open sourcing BB, one of the main selling points of BB hardware and software is its security. And if they were to open the source code, it may scare away some corporations under the false assumption that just because the code base is open, it imposes a security risk upon their organizations.

So, that is why I am against the idea.

Re: Opening BlackBerry OS and supporting GNU/Linux

We do not open source the core of QNX but many layers above that are fullly open source.  We also open source frameworks and many samples

An overview of our Open Source activities is at http://blackberry.github.com.   Some useful shorthands include a list of the repositories at http://blackberry.github.com/repos and a list of our samples at http://blackberry.github.com/samples.  Also see http://OpenBBNews.wordpress.com and, of course, http://DevBlog.BlackBerry.com

I'm a GNU/Linux user like you too :smileyvery-happy:

I wish that all manufacturers had special attention to developers who use linux as android has. But I am sure that soon bb will offer a Linux support as good as for Windows in your SDK tools :smileyvery-happy:

RE; Experience with defective Blackberry

Good afternoon,

I have a Blackberry Curve 9360 and it has been hacked severely.  I am looking for someone to fix it and do it legally to uphold within the laws of North Carolina.  I require documentation and everything to do with when a cell phone has been hacked.  Can you assist me or have knowledge of some that can?

Thank you in advance.

Re: RE; Experience with defective Blackberry

I replied to your other thread with the following:

First, this board is monitored by BlackBerry but is not an official support channel. Most of us are just other users who like to help.

Fortunately, what you describe is not possible without someone getting the device in their hands physically (or unless it's attached to a corporate server.) However, here is how to fix whatever is wrong with the device. Be sure and make a backup before doing this:
