what happens to file when it is deleted?

I was wondering what happens to a file when it is deleted? As I see some files which have been deleted from my blackberry accidently, can be recovered with the help of some recovery tools. My question is, how do those tools recover data and from where?

Please use plain text.

Good Question, When file is deleted it just mark that the file is deleted so the file wasn't destroy as long as no new data were overwrite on it.so the recovery program is just remove the mark that the file is deleted

Are you absolutely sure about that? That's how it works on an MSWindows environment.

Thank  you for your reply JSanders. Just one more question : How can we prevent this from happening that the recovery tool should not unmark the file from deleted to not-deleted?
