Address book, Contact name encoding problem

Hi all,

hope you all had a nice rest this summer and are fresh and ready to make another run at conquering the mobile world with our favorite pet: Blackberry Smiley Wink

A customer of mine has reported strange problem with my app.

The application stores address book contacts in a hash table for faster matching of number/contact name.

I used knowledge base example (How to access address book contacts KB) as the base of my work.

I never had any problems until a customer reported this:

He has a contact named Müeller and the app displays the name as MÃ%eller !?

Of course, I tried to reproduce the problem but inputting the 'ü' via blackberry does not reproduce the problem. The character is correctly recognized/displayed.

The customer uses a separate application for handling address book contact editing/synchronization, etc.

My guess is that these external applicaiton somehow send the wrong character code to the address book.

Did anyone have such experiences ?

Anyone knows how to reporoduce such behaviour ?
