I was getting 100-300 on the simulator, I have no clue what happened to make it go to ~1000. One interesting thing to me is once you turn off Graphics Acceleration (which reduces problems anyway) the simulator runs at about the same speed as the actual device. I wrote a couple little benchmark apps a while ago and I can run them on the sim and device at the same time and the results are near the same.
