Blackberry OS 7 Highlander.

Hi,

it seems that we will see OS 7 soon.

http://www.berryreview.com/2011/03/30/blackberry-os-7-highlander-to-meld-os-6-1-and-qnx-together/?ut...

Do you think that this OS will run our apps written for 4.6 without any modifications?

Re: Blackberry OS 7 Highlander.

Fits my own theories well, discussed it at lunch with my colleagues.

I think the BB API will stay available on QNX based BlackBerry phones as well, they'll "just" integrate a VM for it, same as for android.

About time that RIM does something like this.

Re: Blackberry OS 7 Highlander.

Hope we can write native code for QNX and have access to everything in the phone.

Unless RIM takes a different stand on security, I very much doubt it. I would be glad to be proven otherwise, though - QNX is a very solid RTOS and working on it should be fun!

Re: Blackberry OS 7 Highlander.

It probably will support native code, but will have certain restrictions for security.

If anyone's ever worked with "stackalloc" in .Net, you will be able to allocate and free memory (and use pointers) but if you try to go outside of the allocated memory you get a standard exception and the program exits.

There are many ways it can go but I doubt they will have a native SDK for PlayBook, then bring the OS (or at least the best parts of it) over to the phone side and prevent the native SDK from being used.
