Conserve Battery Life With Location Provider

Does anyone have any suggestions for reducing the battery while using a Location Provider.

I would like to have the provider run as long as possible without the phone dying.

My goal would be 8 hours.

Thanks!

Re: Conserve Battery Life With Location Provider

This depends largely on the use-case of the application.

One app might only need an occasional fix, while another may need a fix every 10 seconds (like driving directions).

From my experience, you will not get 8 hours of continuous service from autonomous GPS - the chip sucks too much battery.

Re: Conserve Battery Life With Location Provider

I have had an 8310 on at&t last overnight with a location listener set at a 2 second interval.

If a fix was lost i could reacquire it by resetting the location listener when unavialbe was passed to my location updated method or when my location object returned null or invalid.

With my 8530 on sprint i was only able to let the phone last for at the most 7 - 7.5 hours using the exact same code.

Given that this were just sitting in the window and not out driving and in motion.
