never used JDE directly
only Eclipse PlugIn
started just in april BB developing (with great results - can show it to you at DevCon:
6 Apps, 8 Libraries in the domain of waste & recycling companies -
Libs for Logging and UI wil become OpenSource EPL soon after DevCon)
...so I need some hints how to test JDE w Debugger
BTW: at EclipseSummitEurope there will be a Mobile Symposium where I''ll talk about and demonstrate BB Eclipse Development

The BlackBerry JDE is our legacy development tool. I don't recommend it over the Eclipse plug-in, but just wanted to try it here as a test. You can download it here: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/javaappdev
Have you tried to start a simulator outside of Eclipse and connect to it? If not, start one up, wait for it to fully load and choose Debug As -> Running BlackBerry Simulator. Do you see any difference here?
I won't be at DevCon this year... but it sounds like you've been very busy with BlackBerry Development. Be sure to show the Eclipse people from RIM what you've got.

I already tried a Simulator outside Eclipse:
* downloaded Simulator and stored at a location outside Eclipse
* in debug launch config choosed this Simulator
* then tried to debug

Please try to use the full installer and install into a new, clean directory. You can download it here: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/javaappdev
Did you install using the update site or installer? If you used the installer did you install to a fresh location or over top of an existing Eclipse installation?

yes, I did a fresh install (9700 - 680)
into a new directory
so it was really clean
then changed my debug launch config in eclipse
to use this new fresh Simulator
BTW: found a JDE installation I downloaded in april, but never used
started and run demo project - works
then while simulator is open back to JDE - Debug - Attach with running simulator
now hangs since some time
"attempting to connect to VM - please cancel to exit"

I meant a fresh install of Eclipse + our plug-ins, not the simulator. Can you give that a shot?

will try this next days - not today
in the process of preparing and extending my BlackBerry Apps to be demonstrated next week at a trade fair from a customer...
..will come back to this Thread later...
thx again for your help

just installed a fresh new Eclipse, but same happens -
Debugger couldn't be attached
tried debug as... and also starting Simulator and debug as on running simulator
(workspace .log same as using the other install)
so something from Windows seems to prevent this
would be great if you can give some informations which ports etc are used from Debugger while trying to connect to Simulator or Device

I think they connect through ports, you could use netstat to see who is
listening or packet captuer and see the attempts.
On my old laptop, again, you had to find a specific rituial to get reliable connects.
The sim is probably written predicated on scertain timing relationships and otherwise
fails, on newer faster laptop it connects just about all the time. Try connecting to
sim after jvm boots but before you try to run anything after of course making sure
socket settings match.

I already tried all these things
and using netstat -aon I can see which ports are in use from which process
but I don't know which ports the debugger will use
