Editing single event in a recurring event list

What is the recommended method for editing a single event in a recurring event list?  The only thing I can come up with is to convert the single item into its own event, and then add that date to the recurring event list's ExceptDate list.  Is this the way it is supposed to be done?

That should work.  Recurring events are identical.  So if you want one to be different you'll need to create a single event for it.
