I have read this article:
I want to connect to a url through http but I consistently get DNSException or tunnel failure. I tried all sorts of connection string suffixes = ";deviceside=true" , ";deviceside=false", ";deviceside=true;apn=apn i got from the service book which was 'blackberry.net'" , "";deviceside=true;ConnectionUID="again what i found in the service book using the method from the article".
The device is bold 9780 with data plan. I can open the url from the web browser.
The same code works on bold 9000 without errors and I can access the url.

Are you using the same SIM card in both devices? Please provide the exact errors and exceptions you are receiving along with the connection route being attempted. Have you tried running the network diagnostic tool available here? http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/Java-Develo

Are the APN settings correct on the phone that fails? This I believe is required for third party apps to work. Also do third party apps with network access work correctly.

It turned out that you cannot create connection during a phone call, all connection attempts fail after the timeout is reached and after the phone call is ended the connections are successful.

"you cannot create connection during a phone call"
I am not an expert on this, but I suspect this is a restriction on older, non 3G devices only and I would suggest that newer devices can, assuming they are using the appropriate connection, talk data and voice at the same time.

2G EDGE can allow network connections during a phone call if the carrier has enabled this on their network. It's also important to note that some carriers enable this in some areas but not others.
