When using RIM "sensitive APIs" I'm aware that I should get signing keys and was directed to : https://www.blackberry.com/SignedKeys/


When entering information for my keys the field for "Company" is required.


Here is why I'm a little confused (some questions below):



    * How is the company associated with those keys?
    * What if I switch companies after obtaining the Keys?
    * Is this my current employer I work for? (ie: McDonald's, Burger King)
    * What if I'm a student?
    * Do I have to create a company just to get keys?
    * What if I put unemployed in the company field?
    * What if I put selfemployed in the company field?

I am employed with a company(which is a good thing these days) but at home and as a software engineer and mobile enthusiast I just started developing blackberry apps and wanted to access to these very important APIs.

Put Consultant, Self-employed  or put your name. RIM expects that you work for some sort of firm when filling the information but if you are a solo developer then it makes sense to either put your name or consultant since you are the company of one of those two.

I just signed up for the keys and there was a section describing the crypto APIs to obtain a license from Certicom http://www.certicom.com/index.php?option=com_chronocontact&chronoformname=rim

So, is there something in layman terms "Why, What, How, and How much?".

Thanks if you can help me out on understanding this a little better. I know security is important but going through another layer of indirection (ie cert authorities) can seem quite difficult at times.

If you are just developing small apps, you don't need it. If you are at that level then you may very well be able to buy another set of keys if it is necessary.

If you fill out the form honestly and your not with a company its OK but don't use BK if your not building apps for them, just flipping burgers. 

I'm not speaking for RIM on this one much more, though I will add this they probably review, thoroughly.
