I'm not sure why RIM didn't include GridFieldManager in all implementations of OS5. As for why it must be this difficult to make a grid layout, I suppose that the BB use of Java is a little more raw than that of say Android. Making a GUI is more work, but it starts to make some sense after enough time working with it.
