Option to create Blackberry Project is not visible in Eclipse (3.7.2)

Hi all,

I'm new to this game (so apologies if I'm posting in the wrong place), However, I'm desperate for some help and my issue is as follows...

I've downloaded the Eclipse (3.7.2) package with integrated Blackberry plug-in from the BB site, and installed in a 'clean folder' as is recommended.

The BlackBerry_Java_Plug-in_for_Eclipse_InstallLog summary reads as follows:

Summary
-------

Installation: Successful.

1333 Successes
0 Warnings
0 NonFatalErrors
0 FatalErrors

I can also see that the Blackberry Java plug-in has also been installed when I look under Help/About.../Installation Details within Eclipse.

However, I cannot see references to 'Blackberry' within the menus in Eclipse, e.g. there is no option under File/New/Project... to select a Blackberry project.

I've spent hours trawling the net for an answer to this but as yet I've not found one, so I'd be most grateful for any advice/ideas you can offer...

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

[ Edited ]

Try

Window-->Open Perspective-->Other

and look for the Blackberry Perspective.  Then i think all the Blackberry Menu options will start appearing.

Let us know how you go with this.

Re: Option to create Blackberry Project is not visible in Eclipse (3.7.2)

Hi Peter, thanks for the response (and the welcome!),

I've just tried what you've described, but unfortunately I'm not seeing a Blackberry perspective option there either.

The perspective options available to me are:

CVS Repository Exploring

Debug

Java (Default)

Java Browsing

Java type Hierarchy

Plug-in Development

Resource

Team Synchronising

Any other thoughts??

Regards,

Steve.

I am not great on Eclipse, but here is what I would check next:

Window-->Show View-->Other...

From the panel that is shon, expand Plug-in Development and choose Plug-Ins.  You should see a list of plug-ins.  You should find included in that list:

net.rim.ejde.****

Can you tell us which ones you see?

Re: Option to create Blackberry Project is not visible in Eclipse (3.7.2)

Ok, I can see the following (all prefixed with 'net.rim.ejde...':

(2.0.0.201207181003)

.componentpack 4.5.0 (4.5.0.30)

.componentpack 5.0.0 (5.0.0.36)

.componentpack 6.0.0 (6.0.0.43)

.componentpack 7.0.0 (7.0.0.33)

.componentpack 7.1.0 (7.1.0.10)

.preprocessing.hook (2.0.0.2012207181003)

As you can see from the above, I also downloaded (via Help--> Install New Software...) the earlier SDK versions, to support earlier handsets. I did this after the standard Eclipse install though (bundled with 7.1.0, I believe) and even prior to installing the addtional SDKs, I couldnt see the Blackberry specific options in the menus.

Make sense?

Re: Option to create Blackberry Project is not visible in Eclipse (3.7.2)

OK, the plug-in you seem to be missing is what I think is the most important one:

net.rim.ejde

For me, it is at version:

2.0.0.201207181003

When I go to the BB Update site, which I think is:

http://www.blackberry.com/developers/jar/win/java

Eclipse tells me it is available.

Do you want to check that?

Sorry - me being stupid.

Well I am at a loss.  I think we might have to wait till someone who understand how Eclipse hangs together, turns up...

Re: Option to create Blackberry Project is not visible in Eclipse (3.7.2)

OK thanks very much for your efforts -

Out of interest, what other options are available to me outside of Eclipse to develop Blackberry apps?

I downloaded Eclipse on the basis that it was offered through the BB site, so I assumed developing BB specific apps would be more straight-forward using this application, however if I cant resolve the issue i've got then I'll need to look elsewhere- any suggestions??

I should say that I'm new to Java, though have experience in other languages (SQL/VBA etc) so the general concept of programming is not a complete enigma to me.

PS. If I should raise this question as a separate thread, please let me know - As mentioned, Im new to this, so Im not yet clear on the etiquette...

Many thanks again

Re: Option to create Blackberry Project is not visible in Eclipse (3.7.2)

There is a legacy development tool called the JDE.  JDE is, in my opinion, slightly easier to use, since it was designed just for BlackBerry Java.  But it was designed a long time ago and Development environments have come a long way since then - if you have used any of the real IDE's the JDE will seem backward.

You can download it from here:

https://developer.blackberry.com/java/download/jde

Note that you download the jde associated with the OS you want to develop on.  If you are not sure, then download it for OS 5.0.

That said, I am not convinced that the BB is a good environment to learn Java.  Most of the documentation assumes that you already know Java, and there are some quirky things involved in BB Java development.  So I would actually recommend that you get a basic 'teach yourself Java' book, second hand off eBay will do, and go through the first few chapters developing on and for a platform that you understand, i.e. your PC.  When you have that under your belt, then try BlackBerry.

Just my opinion.
