Read Smartcard connected to smartcard reader over USB

Dear Friends,

I am trying to build application to read the data from the smartcard which resides in smartcard reader. which is connected to blackberry device via USB cable. I am stuck at initial stage itself. your help ll be appreciated . My doubts

Why is the smartcard reader is not getting detected automatically when it is connected to BB device?
what needs to be done to detect the smartcard reader?

BlackBerry does not support host-side USB (I think that's the phrase). Basically it cannot act like a computer, thus you can't hook up a smartcard reader and have it simply appear as an extra media card.

I'm not really sure, the only thing I know that can work off the USB is GPS receivers but they might have a different mechanism to run.
