Why is this not possible? I need to use the microphone input to record high frequency (approx 18 - 22kHz) sound with the built-in microphone of blackberry devices, and need to sample at 44.1kHz.
i see that up to 48kHz audio is supported.

The microphone hardware can at best record at 8 kHz, although it can be as much as 12 kHz on some devices. This is a hardware limitation. It's also why when you record audio (in any format) it sounds in the best case like phone-call quality, because it essentially is.
The page you referenced indicates the sample rates that can be played back, but it does not mention what can be recorded, which I mentioned above. Just FYI, it is also out of date since the latest device it mentions is the 8830 - the sample rates for playback are much higher on newer devices. Unfortunately the recording capability has not kept up the same pace.
