The server side application can send back a notification that the message was received, notifying your application that the data was sent.

Mark, that goes without question.  However, in this case, the server is a device that does not send any data back.  It's essentially an off the shelf black box - i can't change it. 

 

That is the problem.

In that case you could create a middle tier proxy type application that the BlackBerry application connects to, which relays the information to your destination server and responds back to the BlackBerry application with a pass or fail type message.

 

Or you can use a direct TCP connection instead of going through the MDS Connection Service.
