Welcome, the U2 Mobile Album app was most likely made, at least, with custom Fields. A Field is the base UI component, everything you see on your BlackBerry is made of a Field. At most the app used the Plazmic Development Kit (which is like Flash) but I don't know how to use that so can't comment on it much.
The best place to start would probably be the links at the top of the forum, they give many links on how to get started. You should also take a look at the app samples that come with the development environments that are available for download for BlackBerry.
