I'm getting reports that our application crashes the Verizon Tour 9630 with firmware 220.127.116.11. First, how is it even possible that a java app crashes/reboots the phone? This would imply a serious firmware bug right? The application in question uses multimedia audio to loop sounds. Has anyone else seen these issues?
Any help really appreciated.

The JVM calls into native code to perform many operations. That native code can crash the OS, as usual in most OSes. It's also possible ot get a JVM 523 error (after which the device reboots) when a "system process" inside the JVM dies.
Anyway, I suggest you create a small application that reproduces the issue reliably and submit it to RIM's Developer Issue Tracker.
