The comments were directed towards apps that try to replace the web being an unneeded fad, not applications in general.
That said RIM is clearly going ahead without Java. They countinue to say otherwise, but Java is clearly not a priority for the QNX OS. (BlackBerry Applications will not port to PlayBook). Time to start learning ActionScript...

I created an account just for this topic, even though I have several years of experience working specifically on the BlackBerry. I am somewhat concerned about my investment in time.
That being said, I think that at least some of the experience writing mobile apps will be useful in air/webkit.
RIM's moving toward air/webkit may be a "gordian knot" style solution for some of the issues of OS fragmentation. Until 2009q4, I still had to compile for 4.1 os to support some customers; at least in 2010q4 I only have to compile for 4.5 os - hopefully soon I can convince my company to only support 4.6 just for the new sms classes...
Once all the big wireless providers stop selling 4.5 devices, life will get better (specifically, why does Sprint hate us and continue to sell 83xx devices with the 4.5 os?).
My 2c rant.
