Any Cascades Viewer available for PDF, Video, ZIP, Docs, ... ?

Viewing an Image is easy: Browse the file system, test the suffix, open in ImageView - perhaps scale down to get a thumbnail

Is there a way to display other filetypes with a Viewer ?

Or have we to wait until native apps are there and then use InvocationFramework ?

Re: Any Cascades Viewer available for PDF, Video, ZIP, Docs, ... ?

I'm fairly certain there's going to be an API to do this based on the Invocation Framework, but relying on installed apps (possibly system ones) for most file types.

Note the WebWorks roadmap page which mentions the Cards API:

"Invoke system previewers, composers, or pickers as cards that slide into your application. Some examples include camera, file picker, and picture previewer."

Everything about that says to me that for something like PDF, it will by default invoke the Adobe Reader, but third-party PDF viewers can be installed and one app can request that the other launch to display the file, "embedded" inside a view of the originating app.

Sounds like one of the last things to come though... it's in the final WebWorks phase but not listed at all (yet?) in the Cascades one.  Maybe just an oversight?

The Invocation Framework is already available in beta2 NDK, Cascades and AIR, but AFAIK there are few other apps to "talk to" yet, so you'd have to build your own sender and receiver...

Jon, this new Card stuff appears to be distinct from, or at least supplemental to, the basic IF capability. While one could put together an app with the expectation there will be external viewers for the various file types available, that's going to be a somewhat (or very?) different user experience than what we'll see once this Card stuff is fully available and in place.

Would any of you be interested in starting  Google Doc so devs can list their apps as targets, and specify mime types?

Hurrah! I just got word from Erin RahnenFuehrer that this was just an oversight:

Re: Any Cascades Viewer available for PDF, Video, ZIP, Docs, ... ?

There is a PDF reader source code has been released recently for cascades BB10, it renders PDF pages as images with any resolution you specify.

You can find the demo on Appworld here:

http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/31100889/

And you can buy the source code here:

Thanks

[ Edited ]

You can also buy the code as an in-app purchase inside the demo.
