But it looks like only for reading contacts. Can I create or edit new contact from my app?

you probably would do this with contact service, https://developer.blackberry.com/cascades/reference/bb__pim__contacts__contactservice.html

as this has an familiar SQL type CRUD system, i would think it would be fairly straightforward
