I'm porting my playbook apps over to bb10.
They were built in AIR but I want to add in some new features for which AIR is just too slow for. I was planning to rebuild them in native but im confused, whats the difference between the native approach and cascades.
Which should I use?

Ok, to be clear - Cascades *is* native. You just start using GUI elements provided by Cascades (add some new libraries) and the structure of your app changes (you use different event handling logic etc). But whatever is available for Native is available for Cascades app. You don't need Cascades if your app for example is using it's own pictures/text rendering, menus, buttons etc implemented let's say using OpenGL.
Can you probably define 'Native' in your own words? What thing confuses you here?
