If you can code up a simple example that reproduces the clicking/popping sound on volume changes, we can take a look into it. It really shouldn't be doing that.

I will code up a simple example. I don't know why my apps always get underruns even when playing silent and doing no wave generation. Is it a bad idea to use blocking calls when writing to the sound plugin buffer?

It looks like I solved my underrun problem simply by raising the priority of the tone generation thread and the playback thread.
So I don't think I'm going to bother with coming up a simple app that suffers from buffer underruns.
