You Set the Agenda: Unconference Day at BlackBerry Jam Americas!

From the blog post here.

BlackBerry® Jam Americas is less than three weeks away! As you may know, Day 3 is Unconference Dayand we need your help creating the agenda. Here’s how it works:

We are now accepting submissions for session topics in two categories: sessions to be led by our Research In Motion® (RIM®) experts, and sessions to be led by you, members of the BlackBerry developer community. We have room on the schedule for eight sessions, of which four will be led by RIM experts, and four will be led by BlackBerry developers.

How do you participate? It’s simple. From now through Friday September 14th, you can propose a session topic via Twitter®Facebook®, or in the comments below. If you want to send us a tweet, be sure to mention @BlackBerryDev, and remember to include the #BBUnconference hashtag.

Once we collect your suggestions, we’ll put it to a vote. The winning entries will become part ofUnconference Day at BlackBerry Jam Americas – and four lucky community members will be invited to host their own sessions!

(If you miss the online voting, don’t worry. You can still propose sessions on-site in San Jose using the Unconference Schedule whiteboard.)

We’re committed to you, the BlackBerry developer community. Let’s work together to build an unforgettable Unconference Day that covers the topics you want to hear about the most.

So, what do you think? What sessions do you want to see on September 27th? Let us know on Twitter, onFacebook or in the comments. We’ll be listening.

"What's needed for Cascades to be ready for BusinessApps ?"

BlackBerry APP's are in many cases also Business APP's and from my POV it's really important to support those kinds of apps.

I really would like to see this Topic at  Unconference Day.

At MobileTechCon (MTC) in Frankfurt this month I already discussed this with Johan Larsby from cascades team

Re: You Set the Agenda: Unconference Day at BlackBerry Jam Americas!

besides the

"What's needed for Cascades to be ready for BusinessApps ?"

and a session about

"Experiences from developing Open Source Cascades client for OpenDataSpace"

I'm planning a third session I discussed with Brian Zubert at twitter today:

"SpeedUp development with Momentics / Cascades IDE"

I'm coming from Java with less C++ experiences and I'm always missing some comfort like Eclipse as Java IDE and there are some scenarios I don't know what to do or where to find....

I have following issues in mind to discuss at UnconferenceDay:

  • HowTo find Libraries
  • HowTo add Libraries
  • Secrets of (Cascades Project) Build Settings
  • Refactoring
    • Extract Functions into existing or new Classes / Functions
    • Renaming Classes (perhaps propagated to QML)
    • renaming / moving QML files inside IDE
  • Wizard
    • Create C++ Class and Headerfile Cascades-specific with QObject etc
    • Create Cascades Project with custom APP name instead of app.cpp / app.hpp
  • Registering Classes for QML - how to maintain the Version
  • Comments: in cpp or hpp ?
  • What does all these Q_xxx templates and when to use which
  • Working with Library Projects
    • C++ Libraries
    • QML Libraries (where I can place my common used QML)
  • HowTo use JavaScript features like substring() inside QML

I know from some discussions with RIM employees that there are different teams for Momentics C/C++ IDE and Cascades PlugIn.

For us as developers it's important that Cascades works seamless inside the IDE.

If you also have questions where the IDE + cascades PlugIn is like a black box for you:

please add your questions here. I'll collect them and blog about when I'm back from San Jose.

And if you're at SanJose come with your questions to this Unconference Day Session -

with some luck and enough interests from developers Brian Zubert offered that this topic could become part of next BBJam (Europe, Asia)

what do you think ?

some ideas to discuss about at Unconference Day:

  • more UI Controls needed
    • Spinner to easy swipe through some text values. Can be like DatePicker
    • Horizontal ImageGallery
    • TextField with DecimalFilter only allowing numbers and decimal point (localized)
  • specialized Virtual Keyboard to enter decimal values (localized !)
  • Formatter to be attached to LabelFields TextFields to display values formatted (phone -localized-, bank code, ...)
  • complete JSON support with different elements
  • dynamically adding / inserting / removing UI Controls from QML
  • HowTo implement Services running in the background

If you have more issues what you need in Cascades to develop business apps, please come to the session at Unconference day or add some comments here. If you're not in SanJose: I will blog about what the experts are saying about this

some more infos on this Session I plan on UnconferenceDay:

I'm developing the Cascades Client APP for OpenDataSpace

a secure Dataspace for BlackBerry.

something similar to dropbox, but with always encrypted data and user-management.

Roland Wienen will talk about this at BBJam - API is Open and Cascades Client is OpenSource (Apache) so it will be easy for developers to use this cloud service inside their Cascades Apps.

A free account with 2 GB space and up to 5 users will be provided for you.

At UnconferenceDay I'll talk about the Cascades App, my experiences while developing and HowTo follow the Cascades UI Design Guidelines.

you can follow the progress at Github: https://github.com/blackberry/opendataspace-cascades

also the DeveloperPreview is available at AppWorld for Alpha Devices

current version focusses on Cascades UI / UX and next month you'll get also access to the OpenDataSpace Server and I'll use the Invocation Framework to make it easy for you to integrate a free and secure cloud database into your apps.

Support for NFC to change URL's by tapping two devices will also be there before BB10 launch.

More infos about the OpenDataSpace project and services at BBJam in SanJose.

Mark,

in the announcement I read that there will be 4 RIM sessions and 4 Communiuty sessions selected by voting.

The poll above allows to vote for 4 submissions. Are these RIM sessions or Community sessions ?

I'm missing my submissions ;-)

Re: You Set the Agenda: Unconference Day at BlackBerry Jam Americas!

ekke, your session was accepted and does not need to go through the voting process.  That was for RIM hosted sessions only.

You should be contacted about this directly soon (if you haven't been already).
