For your Ubuntu installations can you check the vmware.log for any OpenGL failures? The logfile should be in the same directory that you installed the playbook images.
If you are seeing failures there it can be caused by old hardware that VMWare does not recogonize as 3D capabable or you are using the default ubuntu drivers. Please make sure you are using the latest 3rd party drivers that are available for your graphics card.

Seeing the same issue with the 2.0.0 simulator on VMware Fusion on Mac. The 1.0.1 simulator is doing fine on the same Fusion.
Comparing the vmware.log files of the working and failing VMs, on of the differences is this warning/error:
Jan 21 14:56:04.801: mks| GLUtil_InstallExtensionLists: Missing extension GL_ATI_shader_texture_lod
Of course I'm not sure if that's the culprit.
The full logfile can be found at:

I downloaded the 1.0.8 version of the simulator and am getting the same "[starting screen]" error.
Seems that only the old 1.0.1 is working on my Mac. But that version has problems with the Native SDK, which requires a newer simulator.
So, I'm pretty stuck now. Kind of between a rock and a hard place.
