7700 series for SprintNextel: will BBM work w/ an OS update?

For any of these ancient Blackberries - series 7700 for Sprint/Nextel (7730, 7750, 7780) - does anyone know if updating the OS will make them fully compatible/operational with regards to Blackberry Messenger (any version of BBM)??
