Desktop Manager error

I'm new to this forum.  I have an 8830 Verizon BB and have continual problems syncing.  I've removed the last version (sorry don't remember) and installed 4.6 without, then with, back to without media manager.  I downloaded the USB & Driver modem when the DM wouldn't recognize my PIN; I used the ports in the back vs. the ones on the side... still NOTHING!  Each time I connect, it starts to "process" and stops with the standard error message:  BB DM has encountered a problem & needs to close.  Sorry for the inconvenience.  I''ve gone to Verizon and downloaded their DM.  The technician and I both came up with the same error message at the end.  Went back to BB.com and downloaded the multilanguage AND the English (I'm currently using the multilanguage) 4.6 without media manager) - still nothing!  Could it be my computer?  I closed all the virus protection programs I could find!  Oddly enough, I'm still getting emails.  I'm such a rookie - I just might not know any better!  Can you help me?  Thanks!
