hi there,
i am unable to connect my 8820 to ANY open wi-fi link. it finds the network and links up with the router but cannot complete the connection. in the wi-fi diagnostics (settings>options>wi-fi connections>wi-fi diagnostics), the 'status' field reads: "IP adress no longer valid".
any suggestions much appreciated,
thanks,
del

Facing the same problem for the past two days. Finally got it to work. Turned out to be a real simple solution:
Settings -> Mobile Network -> Data Services -> On.
Frankly this does not make sesne at all since I did not subscribe to data service from ATT. To make sure this is really wi-fi:
1) I turned off "Mobile Network" and leave only wi-fi on - still working.
2) Turned wi-fi off as well, no longer able to browse.
Before doing this, I tried:
1) Reset Bold.
2) Reset my router.
3) Tried 5 different hotspots.
4) Tried manually provide an IP.
5) Make my router an open network.
6) Restart Bold
7) Update router firmware
...
Appear none of these is the issue but the "Data Services". Hopefully this solves your problem.

Just wanted to write that this post helped me with my 8520 (Curve). Same problem, same solution. Thanks!

I have had this problem for months with my Blackberry Bold 9600. This solution worked perfectly. I know it is the WiFi and not the telecom operator because I turned off the telephone reception alltogether. That is, I enabled dataservices in mobile network options, but disabled the box on top with mobile network. I know this is illogical, but it works like a charm. THANK YOU!!!

After many hours of confirming active connections via several hot spots and my wireless router, yet receiving IP
address no longer valid, I found your solution to be immediately effective. I am amazed the solution is so simple.
Many thanks for your posting.
