Do a simple reboot on the BlackBerry in this manner: With the BlackBerry device POWERED ON, remove the battery for a minute, and then reinsert the battery to reboot. A reboot in this manner is prescribed for most glitches and operating system errors, and you will lose no data on the device doing this.
Now, try your SMS again.

Try this, let's separate your SMS messages to their own folder from the main Messages folder.
Open your Messages folder > Menu key > Options > Inbox Settings.
now UNcheck your SMS messages to go to their own folder.
If you don't have that setting, look in the Messages > Options > General Options folder and scroll down to "Separate Email and SMS inboxes" and check that.
Now, return and look at the separate SMS folder. Can you send an SMS message from there?

Hi thanks for the ideas.
I do not have the Inbox Setting folder.
I have gone into the general settings and opted for 'yes' to separate my emails & SMS . But there is still not an SMS function on my menu. I have a new icon SMS and MMS but if I open an SMS there is no facility to reply or create a new SMS.
My message folder is also recording a record of all my tel call (I don't know it that helps your thinking).

I'd call your mobile service provider.
Almost ALL of the SMS functions are controlled over the carrier network, not within the BlackBerry device native OS software.
