Sprint 8830 World Edition SIM issue and possible cause

I recently purchased a Sprint 8830 World Edition as a good travel/backup phone. The device is unlocked, as verified by going to Options>Advanced Options>SIM Card and then typing MEPD. Everything there shows Disabled.

Here's my problem:

While in the U.S. just to test it out, I inserted a T-mobile SIM and the 8830 searches for a GSM network, and after a while shows "no service". I also tried an AT&T SIM and the 8830 does the seach again, and after a while shows "no service". Am I getting this because I'm the U.S? Is this any indication I'll have a problem in another country using a local SIM card?

Addition info:

When the 8830 was released, way back when, I found a comment from someone saying

"this (8830) is only unlocked for GSM networks, and presumably only those GSM networks that aren't in the same region as Sprint networks (so roaming on AT&T and T-Mobile in the US is probably also out of the question"

This correct. It will not work in the US.

Yes, and obviously while out of the country, you will need the SIM card from the local carrier and a BlackBerry Data Plan from the carrier too, if you expect to use data, email, etc.
