RIM, you are going to keep hemorrhaging money and losing your fanbase if you keep trying to copy Apple! Unfortunately, you will never be able to perfect the touchscreen because Apple got there first, did it better and got the patents!
Why not focus on what you were great at originally?
The reason you have been so popular with the younger markets is A) because bbm is FREE and addictive (the download and received icons were GENIUS), and B) You hailed privacy and encryption above all others, but sold yourselves out after the London riots.
Anyway, here's my idea...
Why don't you create a handset which bounces its connection and streams data through other handsets thus eliminating any need for a centralised network? You could 'pair' your devices up and generate an encryption key so all the data sent through other peoples devices couldnt be intercepted. This would dramatically reduce costs, especially if you managed to get it to stream through wifi spots across the country. If there wasnt a centralised network then network downtime would be a thing of the past - you could always get a connection 'bouncing' off others handsets!
I think this could be the future of mobile networking as sending and receiving data needs more and more infastructure and the need for privacy and security are greater than ever.
Also - stick a decent HD camera on the back of it, 5mp is just awful.
